Multi-slice Optical CT Scanner for Education

DeskCAT™ is a state-of-the-art multi-slice optical CT scanner designed for educators requiring a safe and hands-on approach to teaching medical imaging in a classroom or laboratory setting. The portable optical CT scanner is capable of performing real-time acquisition, reconstruction, and display of 3D CT images. DeskCAT™ comes complete with a variety of phantoms, up to 20 hours of lab exercises and an unlimited software license.

DeskCAT™ is ideal for safely demonstrating the following principles:

Acquisition: Projection images (analogous to digital radiography) of a translucent object, detector characteristics, multiple projection angles for CT reconstruction, fan and cone beam geometry.
Image Review: Pre-treatment of projection images for CT reconstruction, filtering, sinograms.
Reconstruction: Feldkamp back projection, variable resolution and voxel dimensions, image data management.
3D Image: Interact with the reconstructed image, demonstrate artifacts, adjust contrast (level, window).

The above screenshot shows the software layout, which includes 4 windows that display different views of the data. Each window can be enlarged to analyze specific results as necessary.

  A) The Camera View window displays the live projection images of the phantom inside the aquarium.
  B) The Centre Slice Sinogram window displays the centre sinogram of your scan and updates for each projection angle during a scan.
  C) The Slice Reconstruction window displays the reconstructed central slice and updates in ‘live mode’ for each projection angle during a reconstruction.
  D) The 3D Reconstruction View window allows you to observe, analyze and manipulate the images in 3D.

Accreditation Goals

With DeskCAT™ teaching medical imaging has never been easier. Real-time acquisition, reconstruction and display of radiographs and computed tomography enables dynamic classroom demonstration. Each scanner comes with 3 unique core labs and there are 6 additional labs for purchase. Each lab is designed to help students learn and understand medical imaging, both in theory and application.

The learning objectives for the DeskCAT™ experimental modules are compatible with requirements set forth by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs. The imaging studies were developed in close consultation with educators at the University of Western Ontario. This university offers a CAMPEP-accredited program in Medical Biophysics.

The Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Educational Programs Inc. (CAMPEP) is a nonprofit organization whose objectives are the review and accreditation of educational programs in medical physics. The accreditation process involves giving a self-assessment report that shows how your program is meeting the requirements set by CAMPEP.

Testimonials

“The teaching of the principles of Computed Tomography to a wide range of students in medical physics or medicine has been very challenging. The DeskCAT™ Scanner fills a real need by providing the educator and students with an interactive experimentally-based teaching tool used in the laboratory or classroom. By scanning a wide range of specimens, students of all sciences will find this  device very helpful in understanding optical techniques and CT reconstruction. I highly recommend DeskCAT™ to educators at all levels of undergraduate, graduate, and post-graduate programs.”
